SANDRA LAYMAN
LITTLE BLACKBIRD
#101, Rosin Dust Music
It is exhilarating to discover an artist and music that unexpectedly captivate you. When I first saw this recording, I knew little of the style of music on it, and nothing of the artist. That being said, I found it to be extraordinary. Sandra Layman plays violin on this album of Klezmer, Romanian, Greek, Turkish, and Hungarian music. Joined by an equally accomplished group of accompanists on piano, guitar, bouzouki, violin, and numerous other instruments, Layman's playing and her music are riveting and moving. For those of us who are unfamiliar with this music, liner notes offer background on each piece and its origin. It wasn't until the second listening that I discovered these notes, because the first time through I did nothing but stop and listen. This collection of live recordings was made from 1982-1985, just prior to which Layman traveled to Romania to study this music firsthand. It would be interesting to hear how that study may have influenced her playing. Layman successfully and masterfully accomplishes what all musicians aspire to do: communicate feeling and to engage the listener.
