Layman's a fiddler who seems part cricket: Her fingers can create a plaintive, sonorous nocturnal wail or leap about the strings like they were blades of sunbrowned grass. Her tastes run toward the melancholy minor-key scales of klezmer and other Eastern European musics, lending even her most languorous moments a sense of emotional weight that lighter fare might not.
